Since Council approvals were granted, the Walmer Street Bridge project is well underway with all demolition works almost complete which included the temporary switchback, footpaths and landscaping. The main bridge structure will be demolished following completion of piling and surrounding foundation works which will support the new bridge.
Whilst steel shop drawings and fabrication of the bridge structure is completed, the site team continues to work on the footpaths and landscaping which have been updated to reflect the newly designed river embankment.
The project team is maintaining program and is on track for the bridge to be opened by December 2023 (weather permitting) with the Yarra Trail works to be completed by February 2024.
How construction will affect the area
While the construction works take place on the Southern land bridge, the Walmer Street Bridge will be closed in full until December 2023 (weather permitting), with overall project completion target of February 2024. As onsite progress develops, monthly updates will be provided via the weblink below with regards to the opening dates of the pathways & bike trails.
Signage to inform cyclists and pedestrians about the bridge closure, including detour routes, will be installed at various points around Walmer Street Bridge leading up to and during construction.
